The Truth About Hands On PDR Training

When I first learned in 1992, my instructor trained me the same way he had learned six months earlier: I watched while he did a few dents. As I looked on he told me what he was looking for and what I should be seeing.
Trouble is I couldn’t see it. So I spent the next three weeks trying to figure out just what I was supposed to be seeing.

So, back to the old way. Ultimately, it was the same three weeks of pain for them as it was for me. They sat at a practice hood while I looked over their shoulder, trying to explain to them what they should be seeing. It’s like trying to describe the color red to a man born blind.
Over the years I wound up training many techs in this great business and I met a lot more who were trained by someone else. Until now every tech has learned the same way. Why?
Is it because we are sadistic and think that anyone who joins the fraternity of PDR techs somehow has to go through the same pain they did?
No, nothing that twisted. Most, like me probably never gave it a second thought.
Then I made an amazing discovery...
What Are You Looking At?
In 2003 I was working with a hail broker at Huffines Chevrolet body shop in Plano, Texas on a large hailstorm. I was on a twelve man crew pushing hail dents at this giant shop. Normally this body shop would do over $1,000,000.00 worth of business every month, but because of a slow economy they were only grossing about half that much at the time.
The body shop manager was very happy when we turned in $400,000.00 worth of hail repair in just one month.
Among the twelve guys working hail was a new trainee of the hail broker running the storm. A hail broker is the guy who works the deal with the shop and calls in the techs to work the hail, usually as subcontractors.
One day this broker and I were talking about the new tech and how he was doing. Pretty soon we were discussing the rigors of training and why it’s so tough to learn.
Suddenly he blurted out, “I hate training people!”
“Think about it”, he said, “you know why its so hard?”
What he said next really surprised me.
“How do you teach someone to see what you see?”
“You can’t do it”, he continued. “They just have to figure it out for themselves.”
I walked away, stunned. It had been right under my nose, but I didn’t see it. In one sentence he uncovered the “great training question”. All these years and all those techs I trained, but I’d never given it a second thought.
The major flaw in every PDR course
It’s no wonder everyone who trains for PDR goes through all those months of pain trying to figure it out. They cannot see what the instructor sees, even when he tells them they should.
But the more I mulled over the question, the more I realized there could be a better way.
I couldn’t get his words out of my head. “How do you teach them to see what you see?” The question kept playing over and over in my head like that lousy pop song by the mentally challenged kid from American Idol.
Night and day I kept asking myself, “How can I teach people to see what I see?”
The Unexpected Answer

When you decide to step up later, you can always add more.
You can get started in your high income dent business right away for very low cost. The best part is you won’t have to keep buying new stuff like auto mechanics and body men do. I’ve had the same set of tools for nine years now.
